Sam waiting to go in against Trinity High School in Camp Hill Pennsylvania. They lost to this enormous team by a dozen and then to Berks Catholic the next day by 2. Catholic schools are allowed to recruit players which makes them tough but we defiantly could have beaten Berks if the Eagles would have been hitting their shots in the first half.

Rice Park

Saw Annie the musical last night at the Ordway Theater in downtown St. Paul. It was a well done production in a beautiful theater that I had never visited before. Had dinner with the whole family first, then took a cold two block walk to the show. It hadn't been above zero since Christmas Eve in those parts and was -12 when I woke up this morning. Back in DC now in balmy 28 degree weather.

Cold, Cold Night

It never got above 0 degrees today and I didn't go out so much. Christmas Day is a good day for not doing much and that's exactly what we did.

Smooch less

Fun night at the basketball game on Friday night.

Jenna's house is very festive.

Two in 24

Boys both had games yesterday and Sam had an another one today. Three victories, two against Lee and an exciting overtime win over Laurel High today.

Dylan played well and had a couple rebounds and 2 points in the freshman team win. Sam played the most he's played all season in a lopsided victory, 87-44. He had 6 points and a half dozen rebounds and a bock in almost 12 minutes of play.

It was a little different story this afternoon against Laurel. We were tied or trailed most of the game. The team rallied from an 8 point deficit late in the 4th quarter and tied the game. They owed the overtime period and won 72-65. Sam had a total of 17 seconds in this game, it's tough to be the freshman in a close game.

2nd Night

Were able to light some candles last night and opened a gift. They seemed pretty happy with the new phones. What 15 year wouldn't be happy with a shiny new appendage.

Wednesday, December 13, 2017

The first night of Hanukkah was spent watching two basketball games and eating dinner at 10pm. No candles for us. The freshman got beat by the Marshall Statesman in a lackluster performance but Dylan played hard as shown here. The varsity team beat the statesman in an exciting comeback. They trailed by double digits the entire game and were down 12 with 5 minutes to go before turning on the gas and winning by 3. They run a wicked press. Sam played a bit but the coach went with a smaller, quicker line up to really put the screws to the other team.

This iffy snow potential has caused the varsity basketball game and freshman practice to be cancelled tomorrow. I'm a little disappointed but snow would be nice and a free Saturday would be welcome. I do like watching the team play.

I started today at Dulles on a plane bound for Columbus. The door closed, then reopened because the landing gear was messed up. The delay was going to make us late for the meeting we were going to attend, so we (my boss was on the flight too) got back in our cars and went home. Not a bad outcome really.

We have a fire warming us tonight and the prospect of a long sleep and snow tomorrow.

Dylan Splash

All three Edison teams won last night. The varsity beat the 12 best team in Virginia by 10 and Sam had his first varsity point, yes 1 point when he made the second of two at the Line. Good games by the freshman, JV and Varsity had Potomac scratching their heads during a long bus ride back to Dumfries.

‘‘Tis the Season

It took about a week from when the tree arrived in the house to finishing the decorating but it's done. We added a second tree in the front family room as well and I got most of the outdoor lights up as well. Now we just need some snow.

Major Win

Well, a good win over the Mount Vernon Majors. Varsity is 1-1 for the season and the freshman team is 0-1-1. 4 more games this week.

Varsity Blues

The battle of the birds (Eagles vs. Hawks) was happening at the same time as the freshman game so I missed Sam get his first varsity minutes, a block and rebound. He didn't get a lot of time but he knew that going into the season. He's a freshman. Both boys have games on Friday, thankfully at different times. Edison lost by 5.

Young Eagles

The Freshman and Varsity teams played at the same time in different high schools on Tuesday. I watched Dylan play the Hawks at Hayfield and Nicole watched Sam playing Hayfield at Edison. This is a rivalry due to the fact that the schools are about 4 miles apart and most of the kids on the teams have played basketball, soccer, football and a kinds of sports together in the many club leagues in the area. The Hayfield freshman team has 3 kids that played on the boys travel basketball team the last 4 years. They all had fun but the eagles lost by 11.

Go Gophers

Empire State

It's been an eventful Thanksgiving in NYC but it's time to head home to work, school and basketball. The boys, Gil and I shot over to Brooklyn to see the Gopher's Men's Basketball Team beat UMass today. It was fun to see them play in tiny LIU gym. Maybe only a thousand people in attendance in a gym similar to high school size.

The Beginning

It's very possible that we are just starting a 4 year journey of basketball at Edison High School. Madness in the Nest was last night where they introduced the varsity teams and had a bunch of other fan participation activities. It as fun to see Sam run out during the introduction with a bunch of screaming high schoolers cheering him on. I hope Dylan get that in the next couple years as well.

Thursday, November 16, 2017

We took a nice, long drive to Manassas Park last night at rush hour and while got to the high school about 10 minutes late for the freshman game, we actually beat the bus with the players on it. It was a long evening but all three Edison teams won with Dylan scoring 5 in the Freshman game and Sam getting a few rebounds, a block and a fair number of minutes in the Varsity game. They both looked good out there.

Web Stars

It seems that that anytime something patriotic happens, the boys end up the front of the school web page.  Earlier this fall they showed up carrying the flag on the football field, now in front of the Thank You Veterans sign on Veterans Day.  They both look pretty good in this picture.

High School Ballers

Just a few years ago they were little travel ball players. They learned enough the last four years to make their high school basketball team. Dylan on the Freshman squad and Sam on Varsity. We were all surprised Sam was asked to join the Varsity team, including Sam. We thought JV was likely but Varsity was a stretch. He's nervous but enjoying it after two practices. He won't see as many minutes on the floor but will learn a lot going up against the best. I'm looking forward to watching all 40 or so games this season and watching them grow as young men and ballers.

The 2017 Edison Eagle Freshman go without a loss. Great season boys.

Sunday, October 29, 2017

The boys played along and took some pictures in a pumpkin patch after a long day on the flag field. I'm sure they just wanted to go home after coaching their team to a victory and refereeing two games. The little Giants are seeded #2 in the upcoming playoffs after beating the Cardinals 19-16.

Friday, October 27, 2017

Dylan recovered a fumble shortly after this picture as the Marshall player being tackled coughed up the ball. Dylan gav3 the Eagles great field position early in the game.

The Hooker

The hook and ladder (or lateral) like we did when I was lateraling to Tim McIntosh in high school.

Sometimes you get an official that wants to help determine the score of the game by calling ridiculous penalties. One official last night took back 3 Edison touchdowns and handed out a 15 yard penalty at the end of the game that gave the Titans a chance of winning. The Eagles prevailed 19-18 in a tense contest. Sam had a 90 yard touchdown on the first play of the game called back on a flag but he managed to get 60 yards on 4 receptions and provided hook and lateral on an Eagle touchdown. Dylan punted brilliantly 5 times with a nice directional punt to pin the Titans at their 10 yard line late in the game..

One Handed Catch

This was a nice catch by Sam.

Fall Colors

First Check

The boys got their first official paycheck today for about 11 flag football games they refereed. Let the social security history begin.

Ray Guy Jr.

So Serious

The boys won their game against Falls Church last night. The Jaguars at not a good team. The Eagles rolled with a 51-0 victory that got most our team in the game at some point. Dylan and Sam played a little less because we were winning by so much and coach got some of the kids in that haven't played a lot. Sam had a low key night with zero receptions and no touchdowns but did have a nice sack.

Dylan played well on offense, got some defense in and had a beautiful 50 plus yard punt. He started kicking rugby style and it's working for him..

Homecoming Dance

All dressed up.

Fort Ward

We had breakfast at the new Bob and Edith's in Huntington and the a visit to a civil war fort nearby. We got out a little bit today before getting the boys ready for the big homecoming dance.

Dylan and Jenna being presented at the homecoming football game last night. I think they have a royal dance at tonight's party.

School Daze

Homecoming week at Edison includes a character day. The boys choose a couple of my old Halloween outfits.

Monday, October 02, 2017

Flag Boys

The boys carried the flag out to the turf on a recent Varsity Football game and are now featured on the Edison web site.  The coach asked them because he knew they would take the task seriously and not screw around.  It's a good sign the coaches see them as respectful kids.

First Fire

It's a tad chilly and why not?
