Getting to the Corner

Here's Dylan on one of his TD runs on Saturday getting to the corner of the defenses and cutting upfield. He is amazingly focused when running, considering he is not so focused much of the rest of the day. Except of course when he is reading about football in a magazine or studying maps in his atlas.

The boys had a good football game today but ended up with a loss to the Chiefs. Dylan ran for two touchdowns and looked pretty good with some solid moves to avoid being taken down. He was actually eyeing the the defenders and making speed and direction adjustments to get away. Both boys were grabbing flags on defense really well and chasing down anyone from the other team that got out in the open field. It was fun to watch and I think they will get even better as the season goes on.

I got back from a meeting in San Francisco last night and am happily watching Dylan play Xbox and same with the electric train right now. We are starting to get the Halloween decorations out now and will spend some of the night getting ready for our favorite holiday. Too bad it's too hot for a fire but the days are getting shorter and the nights colder. Many logs will be burned soon...

Here's some photos from disney last week.

I'm staying at a nice place right down off the San Francisco bay, across the street from the Ferry building. My trip west was pretty quick this morning and I was pleasantly surprised to see Randy Moss back in purple when I switched on my phone and went to Facebook. The football season just got interesting again.

The first fire of the season is 8 days later than last year according to my blog. We left Florida at 7am this morning and landed in a cool 48 degrees back here in Virginia. It never got up much past 50 so I decided to burn some wood and get that fantastic smell back in the house. The neighbors probably think I'm nuts but it feels good.

Night Travels

The boys and I are home alone for a few nights this week and we managed to get through the first one pretty well. Of course we ordered pizza since I didn't really feel like cooking and we got to bed a little later than usual because it just takes a while to get everything done before bedtime. I pretty much went to bed at the same time they did last night but woke up at about 11pm and found boy number 1 in bed with me. That would be Dylan. Kicking and snoring per usual. He's got the jimmy legs. I finally fell back asleep after a while and when the alarm went off at 6am I rolled over and found boy number 2 in bed with me.

I'm not really sure how it all went down but at some point Sam either jumped in my bed and kicked Dylan out or they passed the baton in the hallway at some point. Maybe they got up and took a drive in the car for all I know. They don't remember any of it. I think I will take them out to dinner tonight, having to clean up the dishes and throwing away the pizza boxes was a hassle enough.

It looks like Tropical Storm Nicole will be out of Florida and up past DC by Friday. Should leave good days for Disney World this weekend.

Originally uploaded by homerclees.

I took the boys to the park yesterday in the rain to run some football drills. They did really well in Saturday during their first game with two touchdowns each. They both ran for one and Dylan threw a touchdown pass to Sam for the second. It's good that it was even. Sam also intercepted a ball and they were both running down the opposing players when they were on defense.

I was quite pleased with the whole thing. I got them out yesterday to work on skills and to run off energy on a fairly gloomy day.

Back Home

I was only away for a night but it is so nice to be back hanging with the boys in the family room as they help me make my picks for the Beat the Insiders football contest and set my fantasy football team. Dylan actually knows more about the NFL players than I do. I think I will do well this week. They are growing up so fast. They have begun to develop a taste in music and have opinions on a whole range of topics. I'm going to travel with them down to Orlando next week and it will be great to spend a long weekend messing around at Disney World.

We have a big touch football game tomorrow and the weather looks perfect for the game. They are really excited about the whole thing and I must admit that I like football much more than the baseball and basketball games they've had. They like football so much that they have contemplated giving up Disney to stay in town for the game next Saturday. Too bad, I already bought the tickets.

First Fall Hike

We got a early fall hike in yesterday at a place not too far away that we had never been before. It was almost totally along the potomac river and a little stinky at times. It was also hotter than I like it but would be a good winter hike since it's so flat. A little more than 3 miles which was fine since we hadn't hiked since New Mexico over a month ago. I spent the day at home as contractors ripped out all the AC, Furnace and water heater stuff and replaced it with super effiecient stuff. It cost a lot but on the positive side, it shouldn't break down on a really hot or cold day and I got a $1,500 tax credit. Thanks US government who will tax me blind anyway.
Check out the pictures from the hike here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/homerclees/sets/72157625000193648/

School Lunch

I went to school today and had lunch with the boys. Sam's lunch time starts about 15 minutes before Dylan's, so I was able to sit with Sam's friends before moving over to Dylan's table. Lots of good conversations with the little grade schoolers. One girl at Dylan's table told me that her Mom is in the Airforce and flies the Vice President around. She also mentioned that the new Vice President comes up to the cockpit and says hi when he comes on board while the old one didn't ever say hello.

I guess Dick was too busy working on the Death Star plans to say hello to his crew. Way to go Joe...

Where Did I Come From

We read the book to them last night and man was that uncomfortable. Sam kept touching the boobs on the naked woman drawing and Dylan kept saying how disgusting it was during the part explaining how the egg and sperm meet. I'm sure we will have to read it to them a few more times in the coming months but then they can just have it to giggle about be themselves.

Hi Ya!

Boys got back to Tae Kwon Do today for the first time in a month or so. Too much traveling this summer. Now they are back learning how to kick my ass. All they really have to do is chop me at the knee and I'm done. Don't tell them.

I uploaded the final group of pictures from the Santa Fe trip on Flickr. It's a bunch of shots stuck together in no particular order. Got some good and bad, including pictures with me in them. Now that doesn't happen that often.

Santa Fe Pictures

I was able to upload most of the Santa Fe pictures to flickr to today. Only have a few left I will probably get to tomorrow. I put them into sets that make sense.

Pecos National Monument: Cool Indian Pueblo and Spanish mission.

Glorietta National Monument: Gettysburg of the west

Black Canyon Trail: Hiked to 8600 feet in the Santa Fe National Forest

Bandelier National Monument: Indian cave dwellings in a big canyon.

Today was pretty kind of cool and rainy, which was a big change from the last few months. It felt good. Saw a tree in Old Town yesterday that had most of it's leaves turning yellow and falling. A little odd in August but a sure sign that the seasons are changing.

Riding Camp

It's been a nice couple days home after a great trip to New Mexico. I think the boys are happy to be back in their own beds after two weeks and actually only being in thier own beds about five nights in month between Minnesota and NM. I started uploading the pictures from the latest trip in segments since it turned out we took 855 photos total. These are the best of the last day of riding camp. http://www.flickr.com/photos/homerclees/sets/72157624557295985/

Adama and Emmy are over for dinner tonight then we are off to Wolftrap for a concert tomorrow. The boys are pretty excited to see their uncle and the energy level is high. They need to chill.

I took about 400 pictures so I will work on getting those up in the next few days. It's been a great vacation. Lots of stuff I hadn't seen before and it's always fun to spend so much time with Dylan and Sam. Not to mention Nicole, Linda and Gil.

Listened to a little country and western on the plaza before dinner tonight, or was it western and country. The Bandelier hike took alot out of us today. It was a beautiful park but the climbing in and out of caves and crawling up the seven story peublo was hard on the knee. The boys sure loved it as I was sure they were going to fall off one of the 30 foot ladders we had to use.

The Los Alamos science museum was nice and the boys learned all the needed to know to build an atomic weapon. They got that going for them. I'll post the every trail hike profile later. Time for bed now.

In this picture, the boys are at about the highest point that they had ever hiked (8500 feet). We finished the 2 mile trek and drove up to the ski Santa Fe basin at 10,000 feet. The boys liked the idea of skiing next to time we visit.

Have had a great few days in Santa Fe with the weather being nice and cool, some thunderstoms rolling by now and again and lots of time with the kids. This place definately has a slower feel than Washington DC and is a much needed break from the work world. Not too much planned today, a museum or two and maybe a trip up the mountain for a short walk. We are heading to Bandalier National Park tomorrow to hike and check out some cave dwellings.

Yesterdays hikes were fun and informative as well. Pecos is a site of an ancient indian pueblo, followed by a couple of big spanish missions. The Glorieta Pass hike was followed a civil war battle people consider the Gettysburg of the west.
